WINTER 2022 SEASON

We're kicking off the Winter 2022 Season with our Entrepreneurship 101 workshop, which is geared towards beginners and open to participants of all experience levels. Those who have completed Entrepreneurship 101 will participate in our two-part advanced workshop, Superpower Hour. This season's Superpower Hour will feature special guest, Cindy Deily, Vice President of Skincare Merchandising at SEPHORA. Participants will leave our workshops empowered and inspired to crush it at our Winter Pop-up Shop in Lafayette, California!

Entrepreneurship 101 Workshop

None; all are welcome

Please note:

Completion of this course (current or past) is required for participation in the pop-up shop

Upon completion of this course, participants are strongly encouraged to attend the advanced workshops on October 23 and November 6.

UPDATE: Participants will be required to submit a product sample, which will be photographed and used for event promotion. Product samples will not be returned.

Upon completion of "Entrepreneurship 101" or BOTH parts of "Superpower Hour with Cindy Deily", students may participate in the optional Winter Pop-up Shop

BEGINNER WORKSHOP

OCTOBER 23 

ENTREPRENEURSHIP 101

Prerequisites: None; All are welcome
2:00 - 3:15 PM; Virtual via Zoom

This 75-minute session will cover:

  • Identifying a product or service based on market need and/or passion

  • Defining your target customer

  • Conducting benchmarking research

  • Calculating cost, price and margin

  • Sourcing and developing your product

  • Understanding corporate social responsibility

  • Crafting and delivering an elevator pitch
     

Note: Completion of this course (current or past) is required for participation in the pop-up shop 

ADVANCED WORKSHOP: PART 1

OCTOBER 23

PART 1: PREPARING TO ENGAGE WITH OUR GUEST SPEAKER

Prerequisites: Entrepreneurship 101 

4:00 - 5:00 PM; Virtual via Zoom

This 60-minute session will cover:

  • Understanding the importance of being prepared in a professional context

  • Using biographical material and tools E.g. LinkedIn, news articles etc. to research and formulate questions for our guest speaker, Cindy Deily

  • Understanding skincare as a product category

  • Introducing SEPHORA as a brand

ADVANCED WORKSHOP: PART 2

NOVEMBER 6

PART 2: SUPERPOWER HOUR WORKSHOP WITH CINDY DEILY, VP OF SKINCARE MERCHANDISING AT SEPHORA

Prerequisites: Entrepreneurship 101 

4:00 - 5:00 PM; Virtual via Zoom

This 60-minute session will cover:

  • Actively listening to Cindy's professional story

  • Understanding clean skincare and sustainability

  • Behind-the-scenes insights into work-life at SEPHORA

  • Understanding merchandising
  • Nurturing your brand from infancy to maturity

  • Design challenge and rapid ideation game

  • Charting your unique path forward 

 

Note: Completion of BOTH PARTS of this course is required for those who wish to participate in the pop-up shop and have already completed Entrepreneurship 101

MILESTONE: PRODUCT SUBMISSION

  • Product sample will be photographed and used for event promotion

  • Logistical information for submitting your product sample will be communicated during workshops

WINTER POP-UP SHOP AT THE LAFAYETTE COMMUNITY CENTER

Prerequisites: Entrepreneurship 101 or Superpower Hour

PARTICIPANT EXPECTATIONS:

  • As a stand-alone Pop-up Shop in a non-retail environment, inviting your friends, family and other networks will be essential to your shop's success

  • Produce ample inventory for 3 hours of sales

  • Merchandise and staff a table with their own one-of-a-kind products or services

  • Pitch their products to shoppers during our Pop-up Shop

  • Fund their business endeavor and keep 100% of their profits (Tuition should not be deducted when calculating profit * )
     

Note: Upon completion of "Entrepreneurship 101" and/or BOTH PARTS of "Founder Hour", students may participate in the optional Pop-up Shop

CONSIDERATIONS & GUIDELINES

CAREFULLY REVIEW THE FOLLOWING INFORMATION PRIOR TO REGISTERING

REGISTRATION PROCESS 

  • When registering siblings, add 1 registration ticket per child to your shopping cart

  • Non-sibling business partners must register separately

TUITION:

  • Tuition for this program is $90 per child. 

  • Girls Crushing It is an educational nonprofit. Unlike a craft fair, your tuition/registration fee covers our entrepreneurship programming i.e. curriculum development, instructors etc. The Pop-up Shop is an optional, free event for participants to gain practical experience. As such, tuition should not be deducted when calculating your child's profit.

CONSIDERATIONS:

  • This program is geared for ages 8 - 17

  • Your child will be expected to actively manage their table during their shift 

  • Business experience is not required to apply for this program, however applicants should have a well-honed business idea

  • Drop-off is strictly prohibited for the Pop-up Shop; Parent/guardian must remain on site at all times 

  • Food, beverages and other products intended for human consumption (E.g., hot cocoa kits, tea, etc) are not permitted for sale at our Pop-up Shop due to health code restrictions. The sale of pet treats is permitted.

  • Business expenses are the sole responsibility of the participant

  • Participants will be expected to follow all applicable Covid-19 protocols and mandates in effect during the time of the event

WE PROVIDE THE FOLLOWING TO EACH BUSINESS FOR THE POP-UP SHOP:

  • (1) Table

  • (2) Chairs depending on the number of business members

  • (1) Tablecloth

  • (1) Simple table-top sign with your business name

  • (1) Square Credit Card Reader (while supplies last) which is yours to keep and for participants who have not previously received one

YOU WILL NEED TO PROVIDE THE FOLLOWING FOR THE POP-UP SHOP

  • Your products

  • Display stands

  • Pricing information (tags, chalkboard signs etc.)

  • Cash box, equipped with change and/or mobile payment processing option (Square, Cash App, Venmo, Paypal etc.)

  • Packaging supplies (note: gift bags will be available for purchase by shoppers)

  • Water bottle, snacks (note: food vendors will be on site)
