SPRING 2023 SEASON

Superpower Hour: Invest in Your Future with Claudia Walker

March 19th

Our guest for this season’s Superpower Hour is Claudia Walker, an Oakland based author and speaker, whose work has been featured in Forbes, Essence, and Black Enterprise. Her best-selling book series, The ABCs of HBCUs, was inspired by her undergraduate experiences at Spelman College and as a student in the Atlanta University Center. After graduating from Spelman, Claudia moved to New York where she helped structure, price, and execute multi-million dollar new issue debt securities for a major Wall Street investment bank. Her second book series, The ABCs of Black Wall Street was inspired by her experiences on Wall Street and love of Black history. In 2020, Ms. Walker launched HBCU Prep School, a family-owned multimedia education company that amplifies Black history and financial literacy through children's books, puzzles, stationery videos, classes and apparel. In January 2023, Ms. Walker launched a Black History Month collaboration with Target.

Mrs. Walker will share her unique founder story with GCI participants. We will also explore:

  • Thinking about your future and navigating educational pathways

  • Investing–and how it applies to self-care, education, and finances

  • Creating a business with social impact

  • Putting your best business ideas into action: ideation to production to sales

  • Storytelling, marketing, branding, and more!

Wonderful World of Wholesale

March 26th

We have a lot of inquiries from retail businesses in Lamorinda and beyond who would like to feature items from Girls Crushing It entrepreneurs in their shops. That’s why we’re over the moon about launching our Rising Star Tradeshow in conjunction with our 2023 Spring Pop-up!

Here’s how it will work: Young entrepreneurs who complete our Wonderful World of Wholesale workshop and the required follow-up steps will be designated as Rising Stars. As such, they’ll be invited to show and sell their products to local retail business owners during our Spring Pop-up, in addition to selling to the general public.

This workshop will equip Rising Stars with the knowledge, tools and skills needed to shine for retail and wholesale customers, including:

  • An introduction to the Wholesale ecosystem

  • The roles and responsibilities of the entrepreneur and the retail business owner

  • The path to getting your product into a retail store

  • Determining wholesale offerings and pricing

  • Pitching to retail business owners

  • Preparing linesheets

  • After the wholesale sale: feedback and follow-up

  • Gearing up for the GCI 2023 Spring Pop-up
